Smoking is the main cause of COPD. Cigarette smoke damages lung tissue and irritates airways, which makes breathing harder. Smoking also damages cilia in the airways. So, the cilia can’t do their job of clearing mucus, dirt, and germs from the lungs.

Did You Know?

The best way to prevent COPD is to stop smoking. If you don't smoke, don't start. By not smoking, you also reduce your risk for heart disease and certain cancers.
